The journey of motherhood, in particular, first time motherhood is daunting. It’s amazing, but it can also be overwhelming; there’s a lot to think about and so many decisions to be made. Many women don’t know they have options and that it’s up to them to decide where and how they’d like to give birth if their pregnancy goes according to plan. Evidence tells us that being supported through your pregnancy by a known midwife is the best possible care you can get.
Building a trusted relationship for the whole journey means you’ll have more control over your experience and typically the process is less invasive than with doctors and other healthcare professionals. The process is often much more natural, with women more likely to labour spontaneously and have a normal vaginal birth. In most cases there is reduced physical trauma and less of a need for drugs.
With a midwife, you’re not abandoned straight after birth either, rather your midwife visits you at home, assisting in bathing, breastfeeding and the ever important role of postnatal mental support.
The odds of normal labour and birth are more than twice as high in planned birth centre births than in hospitals.
- 19% less likely to lose their baby before 24 weeks
- 24% less likely to experience Pre term birth
- 16% less likely to have an episiotomy
- 6% less likely to have a caesarean
- More likely to breastfeed successfully
- More likely to have a positive birth experience
Choosing midwifery-led care was the right choice for me and my family and we have now experienced two beautiful births in Midwifery Group Practice (MGP). My pregnancy, birth and postnatal care were exceptional. I felt like our midwives actually listened to us and what we wanted, treated my husband and I like a team and genuinely cared about us. All decisions were ours to be made and I felt safe and supported. (Marnie, Mother)
