Caesarean section rates in the Nordic countries are between 15% and 20% and they enjoy some of the lowest perinatal mortality rates in the world.

What is it about the Nordic countries that make this possible and what can Australia learn from them?

Professor Ellen Nøhr from Denmark will present a successful model of structural and organisation change aimed at reducing caesarean section rates, developed in Sweden. This model successfully reduced overall caesarean section rates by 25% in a tertiary maternity service. She will then discuss how this model has inspired interventions in Denmark to promote vaginal birth.

Ellen Aagaard Nøhr has a long clinical background as a midwife followed by an academic career in reproductive epidemiology at Aarhus University, Denmark. She now holds a position as the first Danish professor in midwifery sciences at University of Southern Denmark/Odense University Hospital, Denmark. During the last 20 years, Ellen Aagaard Nohr has done extensive epidemiologic research, mainly based on the unique Danish National Birth Cohort. In the clinical part of her position, she collaborates with midwives and obstetricians across Denmark to evaluate and improve maternity care.
