This statement articulates the midwifery scope of practice in the Australian context as defined by the ICM

"Scope of practice" is defined as roles, functions, responsibilities and activities that a midwife is educated and competent to carry out; has beneficial outcomes for woman and baby; is accepted as contemporary midwifery practice by the profession; and meets legislative requirements, professional standards or evidence, and local or organisational policy.
