Healing through acknowledging the past and building intercultural relationships for the future
ACM is committed to growing relationships that are built on respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions, history and culture. Through the acknowledgement of past iniquity, we will move forward together creating resilient communities by enabling women to be strong and confident mothers.
To help us do this, we are developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Our RAP will set out our commitment to meaningful, mutually beneficial and sustainable initiatives and actions that build intercultural relationships based on respect, trust and cultural safety. The RAP will also promote opportunities that result in self-determination, equality and equity for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
By progressing positive intercultural partnerships, we will work to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and babies through the provision of culturally safe maternity care. Regardless of where they live, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and babies will enjoy lifelong good health.
In the next few weeks we will be sharing information and resources with you that will inform and educate you about RAPs and why we've chosen to create one. In February and March we will be consulting with you to determine what should be in our plan. It's important to have your say in what our vision for working together should be, as well as practical actions that we can take over the next couple of years. These actions must:
- increase the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and perspectives of all our employees’ and members;
- embed culturally appropriate practices and policies across the organisation;
- work to influence our members and stakeholders to deliver culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, babies and families;
- develop and implement opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, members and midwives
