International Day of the Midwife

International Day of the Midwife is the day for communities around the world to recognise and celebrate the important role midwives play helping women and families navigate pregnancy and the transition to parenthood. Midwifery is one of the oldest professions in the world, ever changing with new evidence, but grounded by the central enduring skill of building a connection with the woman. We urge you to reflect on May 5. Join a walk or take a walk by yourself and think about the privileged and challenging career you’ve chosen.

Continuity of midwifery care is the gold standard of maternity care in Australia. Care from the one known midwife is known to result in better maternal satisfaction with their birth experience, greater likelihood of carrying to term, greater chance of breastfeeding successfully, better outcomes for babies (less babies die!) and it all costs the health system less. It really is an unbeatable standard and we want every woman in Australia to know the benefits of continuity of midwifery care. Make May 5 the day to explain to women why they should #choosemidwiferycare.
