About Us

An organisation for the midwifery profession

ACM Board & Council with CEO

We are a national, not-for-profit organisation that serves as the peak professional body for midwives in Australia

The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) was founded nationally in 1984, when midwifery associations in a number of states and territories came together to create a national peak body for Australian midwives.

We provide a unified voice for the midwifery profession, support midwives to reach their full potential and set professional practice and education standards.

We are committed to being the leading organisation shaping Australian maternity care, to ensure the best possible maternity outcomes for all Australian women. We are guided by research evidence that pregnant women and mothers benefit from having access to midwifery care throughout their childbearing experience.

How is the ACM structured?

We are a national organisation with members in all states and territories. We are governed by a 9-member Board of Directors consisting of the President and 5 other midwife members who are elected by the membership for a 3 year term, and 3 community directors appointed by the Board based on the needs of the organisation.  The role of the Board is to ensure we are carefully governed and that our members’ contributions are wisely used. The Board is also responsible for setting our strategic direction and for ensuring this is followed through.

We also have an 8-member Council which consists of an elected member from each state and territory. The Council brings issues from the members in the states and territories, provides advice to the Board and undertakes specific activities, including managing the ACM Awards program.

We have a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who is responsible for the operational management of our organisation, including directly employing and managing the staff, and ensuring the strategic directions are implemented. We also have a number of Advisory Committees and Working Groups that provide advice and support the work of our organisation.

Welcome from our President, Caroline Homer.
