The Australian College of Midwives (ACM) welcomes today’s announcement by Victorian Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas MP of the state’s first Chief Midwife.

ACM has consistently called for stronger midwifery leadership within all jurisdictions, and the introduction of a Chief Midwife in Victoria marks an important milestone for the profession and for maternity services across the state.

ACM Associate Professor Zoe Bradfield said this important appointment will help ensure maternity policy and practice in Victoria are guided by a midwifery leader with a deep understanding of best practice maternity care, and midwifery models of care and the needs of women, babies, and families.

“The appointment of a Chief Midwife in Victoria recognises the important role of midwifery in maternity, women’s health, and sexual and reproductive healthcare and will inform key health decisions that shape how care is delivered,” Dr Bradfield said. “It’s a positive and intentional move that supports safer, more coordinated maternity services and better outcomes for women and families.”

The establishment of this role signals Victoria’s commitment to strengthening maternity care, in both metro and rural and regional areas and recognising the essential contribution of midwives in the health system.

ACM looks forward to working collaboratively with the new Chief Midwife and the Victorian Government to support high-quality, evidence-based maternity care throughout the state.
