Fellowship of the Australian College of Midwives

What is Fellowship?

Fellowship is awarded to midwives and others who are members of the College and who have made:
  • a significant contribution for the benefit of the midwifery profession and/or the health of women and their families, and
  • a significant contribution to professional excellence in midwifery through consistent professional excellence in midwifery care and practice, education, management, research, scholarship and/or other outstanding development.

There are three fellowship Categories

  • Fellow
  • Distinguished Fellow
  • Honorary Fellow
A member who has been admitted to fellowship is known as a Fellow of the Australian College of Midwives and is entitled to place after her/his name the letters FACM.

A Distinguished Fellow shall be entitled to place after her/his name the letters FACM(Dist.)

An Honorary Fellow is entitled to place after her/his name the letters FACM(Hon.)

Fellow

The criteria for eligibility for admission as a Fellow are as follows:

  • Continuous financial membership of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) for the last five (5) years.
  • Evidence of formal and/or continuing professional development other than that gained from initial midwifery registration.


A significant contribution for the benefit of the midwifery profession and/or the health of women and their families, as demonstrated by:

  • Professional and personal development of self and others within the sphere of midwifery
  • Practice commitment to the Australian College of Midwives and other related organisations, including significant contribution and participation at local, state, national and/or international level
  • An outstanding contribution to professional excellence in midwifery through consistent professional excellence in midwifery care and practice, education, management, research, scholarship and/or other outstanding development.

 

Distinguished Fellow

Distinguished Fellowship of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) may be awarded to any Fellow who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors of the day, has furthered the cause of midwives and midwifery nationally and / or internationally and made an outstanding contribution for the benefit of the midwifery profession and / or the health and wellbeing of childbearing women and their families.

Distinguished Fellowship is conferred for the lifetime of the individual and can only be revoked by the Board of Directors of the College after due deliberation.

Honorary Fellow

Honorary Fellowship is awarded to an individual who is not a midwife and who, in the opinion of the College of the day, has made a significant contribution to midwifery for the benefit of the midwifery profession and/or the health of women and their families.
